Originally numbered 1472, it was renumbered to 4472 in 1924 and officially named Flying Scotsman, after the train service between London and Edinburgh. In 1934, the Flying Scotsman reached a speed of 100 mph, the first locomotive to ever achieve this speed. It was retired in 1963 after 40 successful years of service.
